Rejoice! For 'tis the end of Sober October, may ye all drink wine and be merry once more

Okay I know it isn’t *technically* the end of Sober October, but my friends and I started two days early so we can *technically* have a tipple or two tonight, right?

I have mixed feelings about Sober October. On one hand I actually enjoyed it (yes, enjoyed it! Shock, horror!) Over the past few weeks, I’ve had really productive weekends (which I need right now, what with planning a wedding and all). AND I lost a few pounds, hurrah!

On the other hand, however, it was kind of dull. Tom and I practically became recluses for the month, which again, was good for the wedding planning side of things, but not so good socially-wise.

It was also strange/awful not having a glass of red with red meat. We had steak a couple of times, a lamb tagine one evening and spaghetti meatballs another, and I was really, really, REALLY craving a nice red. We tried grape juice as an alternative, but no… just, no.

We’re bidding farewell to Sober October properly tomorrow evening and having a Halloween party with booze a plenty. I know I’ll probably miss that smug Sober October feeling on Sunday morning when I’ll just want to spend the day lying on the sofa in my PJs, eating popcorn and watching re-runs of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

I do think I’d be up for another sober month at some point and would encourage anyone to give it a go if they fancy a bit of a detox because you definitely do feel better for it. Unfortunately (?) I’ll be missing out on Dry January because my hen party is on January 16th which I am so excited about! My closest friends and I have booked an apartment in Liverpool and we’re going to have such a fun, mad, definitely-not-dry night! x

Rugby match and Sunday lunch – the two challenges of Sober October: Week One!

Golly I feel so guilty for neglecting my blog! I can’t believe I haven’t posted since July, but things have been a little hectic with wedding planning, house sorting and work. I’m going to make sure I post more regularly now however, because I do love me blog I do.

SO! Tom and I have been taking part in Sober October with a few of our friends and we’re just about to venture into our second alcohol-free weekend. We decided to do it partly because we’re ‘shredding for the wedding’ (only five months to go now!) and also because cracking open a beer or a bottle of wine on a Friday night was becoming a bit of a routine.

Our first Sober October weekend came with two challenges. Firstly the England v Australia Rugby World Cup match, which was a mix of sulking and celebrating. While I wanted to drown my sorrows with a glass or two, Tom was all set to crack open the champers and celebrate our woeful defeat, being the proud Welshman that he is.

Our second challenge was Sunday lunch. We booked a table at The Sun, which is one of our favourite restaurants. The food was absolutely divine as always. The only thing missing was a nice glass of red with our roast beef… but we settled for elderflower pressĂ© (in wine glasses!)

Despite those two situations which definitely warranted a tipple or two, I’m actually quite surprised how much I’m enjoying Sober October (so far anyway, it’s early days yet!) But it is quite nice waking up on a Saturday or Sunday morning with no foggy head, not wanting to sleep-in or eat junk food and having a productive day instead of slobbing out on the sofa. Let’s see how the second weekend goes!

Are you taking part in Sober October? Let me know how you’re getting on!
I would like this waiting for me on 1 November please.

My Travel Bucket List: Five places I HAVE to visit!

1. Italy
I fell in love with Italy when I visited Rome and Venice and I’m desperate to see more of the country. Luckily, Tom feels the same way, so we’re planning an epic honeymoon travelling all around Italy for three weeks. The plan (so far) is to fly into either Rome and Venice, then make our way down south to Calabria, while stopping off in lots of beautiful places on the way. For me, the places I really want to see are Sorrento, Florence, Chianti, Verona, Lucca, Positano and Lake Garda.

2. New York
I genuinely can’t believe I’ve never been to New York! It seems as though everyone I know has been and from the sound of it, I’m definitely missing out, but fingers crossed we’ll get there in the next couple of years. I want to go to the top of the Empire State building, buy a cupcake from Magnolia bakery, eat a Pastrami on rye sandwich, go for a walk in Central Park, wander around art galleries and museums, track down Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment (I am still not over Sex and the City) and people watch over a cocktail or two.

3. Monaco
I am a huge Formula 1 fan and watching the Monaco Grand Prix would be a dream come true. I think we might have some serious saving to do, but hey, one can dream (... and buy lottery tickets!)

4. India
My grandad was from India so I think that might be why I’ve always had a fascination with it. My mum and I often say what a shame it is that he didn’t keep in touch with his family because it would be amazing to go and visit them now. The places I would really love to visit are Mumbai, Agra, Jaipur and Kerala.

5. Greece
Santorini is the number one place on my Greece hit list! I’ve never seen a bad picture of the place, it just looks absolutely stunning. I’d also love to visit Mykonos, Rhodes, Athens and Crete.

There we have it, my top five travel bucket list! Where are your top places you want to visit? Comment below, or tell me on Twitter or Instagram: DinkyDanni_

Are you a bride-to-be? Top tips to help you find the wedding dress of your dreams!

Wedding dress shopping is such an exciting experience... you hope it’s going to involve plenty of fairytale gowns, champagne and happy tears, and you REALLY don’t want it to remotely resemble *that* scene in Bridesmaids.
I am still walking on air after finding my perfect dress. So here are my top 13 tips that will hopefully help any brides-to-be find the dress of their dreams!

1. Do your research
No really, DO YOUR RESEARCH! This is absolutely vital, hence the shouty capital letters. This is probably going to be the most expensive dress you’ll ever buy and you’re going to be wearing it on the most important day of your life. You really don’t want to look back on your wedding pictures in 10 years, shudder and ask yourself what the heck you were thinking.
I’ve found two techniques that work well for basic wedding dress research:
One, you can buy a huge pile of bridal magazines, grab some scissors and glue and put together a scrapbook. Or you could just fold down the pages of dresses that take your fancy. If you do this, it’s worth making a note on the page about what exactly it is that you like - is it the style, the silhouette, the material, the detail? Jot down anything and everything that you love.
Two, create a Pinterest account, if you don’t already have one. (*Warning* it is very likely you will quickly develop a Pinterest addiction!) There are tons of wedding dress images on Pinterest, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Try searching for different designers, cuts and shapes, as well as your wedding theme and your wedding season. Pin everything that catches your eye.

2. Check out loads of designers
Think of it this way, if you were buying a £1,000+ handbag, you’d want to buy it from a designer you absolutely love, right? It’s the same with a wedding dress. There are SO many designers out there and they all bring something different to the table, it just depends on the look you’re going for and the type of dress that will complement your wedding theme. A few to get you started are: Mori Lee by Madeline Gardner (my favourite!), Sassi Holford, Justin Alexander, Essence, Jenny Packham.

3. Write a hit-list of shops to visit
These shops could be nearby, or you could even tie your shopping trip in with a fun girly weekend away. Just bear in mind that you will probably have at least two fittings before the big day, so be careful not to complicate things TOO much by having to travel really far away each time. If you have your heart set on a particular designer, try to pick shops that stock that designer, then you can prioritise trying on those dresses.
It’s also worthwhile doing a quick google search of the shop names, as wedding forums with reviews will often pop up in the results – this is a good way of sussing out whether a shop is worth visiting or not... just keep an eye on the date of the comments, if they were written five years ago then things might’ve changed (for better or worse – excuse the pun!) Give the shop a call and book an appointment, bearing in mind bridal shops tend to be quieter on weekday mornings and busier on Saturday afternoons.

4. Choose a trusted few to go with you
When I was researching wedding dress shopping tips, I read that you should never invite more than three people to go with you. It’s also worth bearing in mind that you want the dress to be a surprise on the big day, so you don’t want lots of people to have already seen you in it! Pick people whose opinions you trust, this could be your mum, best friend, godparent, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, or another family member or close friend. I really wanted to invite everybody close to me to come along when I was dress shopping, but I ended up just asking my mum, my best friend and her mum who’s also my godmother. We made a weekend of it and it was great fun!

5. Have a pamper session the evening before
When you are trying on wedding dresses, you want to look and feel your absolute best. Indulging in a little pamper session the night before is a great idea, as you’ll be walking on air afterwards and you’ll look great too. (Don’t be tempted by the fake tan though, you don’t want to leave any orange smudges on the dresses!) I’d recommend starting off with a nice hot bubble bath, shave and exfoliate, then pop a face mask on. Use loads of your best moisturiser, pluck your eyebrows, paint your nails and dry your hair in your favourite way. You’ll feel absolutely amazing afterwards!

6. Eat breakfast!
It can be tempting to avoid breakfast, but trust me, it’s definitely better to eat something. Firstly, trying on wedding dresses is knackering! They’re big and heavy and not the easiest things to get on and off. You can get really hot and bothered and the last thing you want is to feel dizzy and tired. Start the day with a nice breakfast that won’t make you feel bloated – think eggs, avocado, yoghurt and fruit. Try to avoid white bread, bacon, sausages and sugary cereals.
Coconut porridge with fresh strawberries and chia seeds is one of my all-time favourite breakfasts
7. Remember to pack…
Shoes that have approximately the same heel height as the shoes you’ll wear on the day. Most shops will have a box for you to stand on in front of the mirror, but you need to make sure the dress flows in the same way while you’re the height you will be on your wedding day. Underwear is really important too. A white or nude strapless bra is a good idea, as is knickers that you’ll be comfortable wearing while stripping off in front of a stranger!

8. Don’t be shy
On that note, it can be a little weird getting your kit off in front of a stranger. But just remember, they’ve seen it all before! If it makes you feel better, wear big knickers and a strapless bra so that you won’t have to take it off if you’re trying on a strapless dress.

9. Keep an open mind
Dresses look so different when they're on the hanger. Keep an open mind and try on lots of different styles. I was convinced I would go for a certain style of dress, but I have actually ended up with a completely different style that I had never even considered. I wouldn’t have discovered that style without trying on lots of dresses with different silhouettes. Remember, you can also completely transform the look of a dress by adding a waist belt, jewellery and, of course, a veil. Many bridal shops can also change dresses by adding straps and altering the neckline. It’s definitely worth talking to them to see what they can do.
A waist belt can completely transform a dress
10. Just because you don’t cry doesn’t mean it’s not ‘the one’
This was something that really surprised me, as I was absolutely convinced I’d cry! Instead, if you are smiling so much that your face aches and you can genuinely picture yourself wearing that dress while walking down the aisle, saying your vows, eating the wedding breakfast, cutting the cake and having your first dance… then you’re onto a winner.

11. Don’t be pressured by pushy salespeople
During my first round of wedding dress shopping (read all about that here) I experienced the full force of a pushy sales assistant. She said if I didn’t order it soon then they’d be working to a very tight schedule to get the dress into the shop and finish the alterations (bearing in mind my wedding was almost one year away at this point). I mentioned this to Margaret at The Brides Room of Birkdale (the shop where I found my dress) and she said that in her 16 years in the industry she has never known a dress take longer than five months to come in. So, the moral of the story is to take no notice of pushy salespeople!

12. Take your time and think about it
I think this is so important. No matter how convinced you are that you’ve found ‘the one’, there’s no harm in going away and thinking about it, even if it’s just for 24 hours. Bridal shops have to order the dresses in anyway, so it’s not as if you’re at risk of somebody else swooping in and buying the last one in your size. Go home, have a glass of wine and look at your colour scheme and your wedding theme ideas. Try to picture the entire day and how you'd look and feel in that dress.

13. If you’re 100% sure, it’s time to crack open the champagne!
Ordering your wedding dress is one of the most exciting things EVER! It’s such an important part of the day and something you absolutely want to get right. Once this is done, it’s a huge box that can be ticked off and definitely time to celebrate! My mum and I did this by eating cake and drinking champagne… I can’t think of any better way to celebrate!

I’ve blogged about my own wedding dress shopping experiences, which you can read by clicking on the links below:

Wedding Dress Shopping Round One: Prosecco, Princess Dresses and Pushy Salespeople!

So, I had my first session of wedding dress shopping last weekend (YAY!) It was great fun, with lots of laughs, smiles and even a few tears.
Pretty dresses aaahhhh!
Firstly, wedding dress shopping is a BIG thing and you want to feel AMAZING when you’re trying on all these super fancy frocks, so I would definitely recommend having a serious pamper the day before.

I had my hair coloured and cut, then finished with a great big, bouncy curly blow (as much as I love living in Cumbria, you really do get the best curly blows in good ol’ Merseyside!) That evening, I ran a hot bubble bath with my favourite Molton Brown bath goodies, plucked my eyebrows, popped a Lush face mask on (review post coming soon!), did a lip scrub and painted my nails and toenails. The only pampering treat I missed out was a fake tan, as that is apparently a massive no-no while wedding dress shopping (nobody wants an orange dress!)

I was walking on air after my amazing pamper session and my mum and I went to pick up my best friend Loren and her mum (my godmother) Cas from the train station, then we had a bottle of champagne and raised a glass to the incredibly exciting weekend that was ahead!

The next morning, we woke up to beautiful blue skies and sunshine. I wanted to wear an outfit that wouldn’t be too much of a faff to whip on and off while trying on dresses (buttons were a definite no-go) so I wore a simple white top (I couldn’t resist wearing something white!), black capri pants, sandals and my favourite pink mac.

We headed off to sunny Chester, but annoyingly, we got stuck in horrendous traffic at Runcorn Bridge. The whole journey took us 90 minutes longer than we expected and I missed my first appointment, ANNOYING!
Stuck in the car selfie. There was sheer panic behind these happy smiles...
We arrived at the second shop I’d booked an appointment with. I’ve been debating whether or not to name the shop, but I’ve decided I’m not going to for reasons that will become clear further down this blog post...

The four of us arrived at the same time as another girl and her family and we were all taken up to a room which was filled with dresses. If I had to guess there was probably at least 50, so plenty to choose from.
Los and I got SO excited, we dived straight in (almost literally) and picked some dresses out. This was at the same time as the other girl who was there, which made it kind of awkward, as it felt a bit like a race to find which dresses we both wanted before the other one could choose them.
Then, for some reason that none of us could work out, the other girl (I think throughout this post she’s going to be known as “the other girl!”) was taken into a private room with a nice big sofa and a cold glass of Pimm’s. Now, I don’t want to sound petty, but I was a little peeved. I was in the main room and, although I had a curtain to get changed behind, I was still very much out in the open and whenever anyone from the other party came out of their room, they could see me.

It might sound silly, but trying on wedding dresses is such an intimate thing that I just didn’t feel completely comfortable having complete strangers wandering around at the same time.

The assistant who was “looking after us” also didn’t offer to get any extra chairs, which meant my mum, Los and Cas had to take it in turns to sit down. Throughout the two hours we were there, we also weren’t offered any refreshments. Now, although I absolutely wouldn’t have turned down a cold glass of Pimm’s… a tea, coffee, heck, even a glass of water would’ve been nice!

Another annoying thing was that she didn’t make much effort at all to make any of the dresses fit me properly. She pinned them all at the back because the sizes were massive on me, but none of the dresses I tried on looked right until either Los or Cas stepped in and pulled them in for me, so I could see how they would fit on the bust, waist and stomach.

Anyway, initial annoyances aside, I tried on some really beautiful dresses. I went there with an open mind, so even though some of the dresses made me look like a blingtastic toilet roll holder, they were definitely worth trying on because at least then I could eliminate those styles from my search.
I don’t want to give too much away, of course, but the dress style I soon learnt suited my body shape was the complete opposite style to the one I’d always assumed would suit me best. It just goes to show that it’s worth trying on lots of different shapes and styles.
"Is this really happening??"
"IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING??"
One particularly emotional and lovely moment was when I found the dress that could potentially be “the one” and the assistant put a veil in my hair. Cas and Los cried, and even my mum got teary (I’ve NEVER seen my mum cry, ever, in my whole life).
My face when I tried on the dress that could be "the one"!
I was almost tempted to buy “the one” right there and then, but I remembered to put my sensible hat on and I told the assistant that as much as I loved the dress, I wouldn’t be buying anything that day, as it was my very first shopping trip.

After I said that, we all noticed her body language change (not that she had been particularly helpful before) and she began to remind me that it would be a very tight schedule to order the dress in and finish any alterations before my wedding date (which is next March, so not exactly round the corner!) She also tried to persuade me to buy it by saying that they’d throw in the veil for free – not exactly a deal breaker when you’re already spending a lot of money on a dress.

I completely closed off when she acted the way she did and it reaffirmed my decision that I would definitely not be buying anything that day (and probably not from them!)

Afterwards, we went to this really cute little champagne bar, had a glass of bubbles and agreed that it was the right decision to walk away. I was really worried that I would regret it, but I think it was the right choice… I might just have to track that dress down to a different shop!
Luckily, my friend Chelsea has given me some great recommendations, so I’m going to plan another shopping trip in a couple of weeks, so hopefully my next blog post will be much more positive! I hate being a Moaning Mary, but thought I should be totally honest about the whole experience.

Also, if anyone has any bridal shop recommendations in Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria, please let me know! x

Dinky Danni - 10 random facts about me!

Yikes, I think I've let my regular blogging plans slide ever so slightly over the last couple of weeks.

Tom and I have started house hunting again which is a massive headache/pain in the arse/ordeal. We've been house hunting on and off for a year now and have had no luck so far, but fingers crossed we’ll find one soon.

Aside from that, we've also stepped up the wedding planning because it is ALMOST EXACTLY ONE YEAR AWAY! Eeep!

SO with all that going on, I haven’t blogged anywhere near as much as I would’ve liked to (especially after my little one-month-blog-milestone-pat-on-the-back-for-blogging-regularly-celebration).

I thought I'd write a personal post about 10 random facts, as I recently changed the name of this blog. A few of my favourite bloggers have been doing this lately and they are always entertaining, it’s nice to know a bit more about the person whose blog you’re reading. So, here are 10 random facts about me, Dinky Danni.

1.      I am reet petite
It used to annoy me when I was younger (... if I had £1 for every time I heard the question ‘how tall are you?’!) but I embrace it now. I'm sure everyone has something they’re self-conscious about (I like to think that includes Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Miranda Kerr too). The thing is to just own it, because it’s part of what makes you unique – as massively cheesy as that sounds.
If it’s something about your figure that you’re self-conscious about, it can help to do a bit of research about how to pick clothes that highlight your best features. Now I know how to dress myself in ways that conceal my vertically-challenged legs. So I’ll wear A-line dresses that nip in at the waist and pair them with high heels, or I’ll wear one block colour with small patterns. There’s so much advice on the internet about dressing for your shape which is really useful.
FYI this guy is actually 7ft7 - the tallest man in Europe! He was in the Southport panto and my editor thought that me interviewing him would be a good/hilarious photo opp (I wonder why...!)
2.     I was born in London, but grew up in a cute little seaside town called Southport
I love Southport and I love going back to stay with my mum whenever I can. It is such a nice town and I have so many amazing memories of growing up there. Silly favourites include:
·        On a Saturday, waiting for one of my best friends, Hannah, outside McDonald’s on Eastbank Street so we could go shopping to Tammy Girl (remember Tammy Girl?!) Hannah’s sister had a part-time job in McDonald’s and we’d go and beg her for extra  toppings on our McFlurry’s
·        Visiting the Southport institution that is Pippin’s. I used to go there for lunch with my nana when I was little. We would always, without fail, order two bowls of soup, a cheese sandwich to share and an egg custard tart for dessert. We had a favourite table which was in the section up the little stairs and we’d sit there and chat all afternoon
·        Watching a film at the old cinema (which is now the Vincent CafĂ©) and buying loads and loads of sweets at the old fashioned sweet shop next door
·        When I went through my ‘mosher’ phase, I’d hang out with my friends at the ‘new’ bandstand, the ‘old’ bandstand or the bowling green.
How pretty is this picture of Southport? The lighting was just stunning and I took it from the window of our room in the Ramada where we had a lovely view of the Marine Lake
3.     I went on my first flight when I was four-months-old
I'm sure all the other passengers were cursing my mum when they saw a tiny baby on the flight. But, much like I am now, I loved my sleep and just slept through the entire journey. I only woke up for food (again, much like I am now!) We went on loads of holidays when I was growing up and I think travelling from such a young age sparked my passion for travel. I love visiting new places and learning about different cultures.
I love this shot of Abu Dhabi from the sky, I took this on our most recent trip there in January 2015
4.     My first ‘proper’ job was a journalist on my local paper
I was a journalist on the Southport Visiter (yes, VisitEr), which was really amazing. Looking back now, I think I definitely took for granted just how fab that job was. I learnt so much and was sent on so many funny assignments. It was also just so cool being able to say I was a journalist (especially as I was only 19 when I first started!) My nana was probably even more excited than me though, whenever she saw a story with my by-line on, she'd keep the paper in our lounge so she could show anyone who came to visit.

Just a standard Monday morning for me as a Southport Visiter reporter...
5.     My first pet was a dog called Charlie
He was a King Charles Spaniel and golly, he was a character! Whenever we’d throw a ball for him to go and fetch it, he’d just look at us like ‘Yeah, and what?’ He also took a fancy to ginger people, he’d often fart then walk out the room and he couldn’t lie on his back properly because his tummy was too big, he’d rock from side to side. I really miss his grumpy little face.
Charlie was quite a patient dog...
6.     I’m getting married next March!
Yes, I am slowly turning into a full-on bridezilla. I can’t wait though, I am so excited to get married and have all of our friends and family there. It’ll be extra special because the way Tom and I met was a bit of a family affair. Our families both lived in Abu Dhabi and my cousin and Tom’s cousin were best friends and our aunties were also best friends. They’d always joked about setting us up (actually no, they weren’t joking, they were pretty serious!). Sadly, when my dog Charlie died in April 2012, I decided I needed a holiday to cheer myself up and jumped on a plane to stay with my family. Tom had also flown in with his nana for a holiday and we all decided to meet up for brunch one day. The rest, as they say, is history! :) We got engaged in Paris on my birthday in August 2013. This year, on 27th April, it’ll be the three year anniversary of when we first met and next year will be our first anniversary as a married couple!
We took this picture about 10 minutes after Tom proposed! (I'd just about stopped crying)
7.     I have an irrational phobia of loud, sudden noises
I am actually getting a bit better about this! I went to my first ever firework display last November and have been able to stand in the same room as a cork being popped, which is a massive step for me (how ridiculous is that?!) My phobia used to be so bad that I literally couldn’t sit in a restaurant that had balloons in, I had to leave. There was also one time when I was younger and we were at a bubbly brunch in Abu Dhabi that I couldn’t cope with the waiters popping champagne all the time, so I had to go and walk around outside until the alcohol package ended!
A typical Abu Dhabi bubbly brunch!
8.     I’m an only child
When I was little, I thought the phrase was ‘lonely child,’ so I’d walk around my class saying ‘I’m a lonely child’ to everyone! I like having no brothers and sisters though, as it means I get my lovely mum all to myself. I’ve also grown up really close to my cousins and I’ve known my best friend Loren literally since we were born, so I’ve never felt like I’ve missed out or like a ‘lonely child’!
With all of my lovely cousins
9.     I had to take my maths GCSE three times before I passed it
… And I only passed it when mum hired a home tutor for me! I am REALLY bad at maths!
... Says it all!
10. I was a vegetarian for 10 years from the age of 8 to 18!
I think it is really mad to look back on that now. I can’t believe I didn’t eat meat for so long, especially as now I have a real passion for food and my favourite meal in the whole world is a fillet steak, cooked rare. I actually have Hannah to thank for being a carnivore again. She knew I was thinking about eating meat and one day, she went to Tesco and bought one of those gorgeous, hot, roasted chickens. She came round to mine and started eating it in front of me, then strategically left, leaving me with the chicken. Well I ate the entire thing, then an entire packet of ham afterwards! I must’ve needed to make up for the lost time.
Me after eating that roasted chicken (thanks Hannah!)
Hope you enjoyed my 10 random facts! x
